Is it just me, or does piloting a narrowboat feel a little like a FPS?

So, fifteen-ish years ago, I did an Coronation feast from late Roman sources, mostly Apicius. A few days ago, Legonium, a Latin by way of Lego Twitter account - twitter.com/tutubuslatinus - posted a comment about Moretum, attributed to Virgil, which I had made for that feast. As it happened, I had some home-made cheese handy, and plenty of celery leaf in the garden. The garlic wasn't mine ...

9/11

Yep. I was in NYC at work that day.

And our latest show had opened for previews the Thursday before.

joke, gender reveal, disaster, christianity

If the river Nile runs red, the messiah will be a girl.

I like gin, so an idea from Jeff to infuse it with tea for a honey-lemon cocktail got my attention. I set up two for sampling this morning: lemongrass and lavender gins

I just opened them for a whiff and they already smell strikingly herbal and delicious. Especially the lavender.

I forget how to tag here, and I don’t know why pic is sideways when it’s upright on camera, but there ya go. Mm.

Mark Ormrod, bio/obituary #medievalist

It's only been a month or so since Mark died, and it seems like longer. Corona-time, I suppose.

I did not know him well, but he was always kind to me, even before I went to York. He visited Columbia some time after I graduated and had been accepted to York, and gave he some good advice on where to look for lodging near York.

His work speaks for itself. The bio below is from the University of York.

"I’m not sure how to feel about the fact that telling a neural net to pretend it’s a smaller, more-confused neural net is now easier than actually training the smaller neural net."

wow @janellecshane
welcome to the future I guess

Rather than collect 1000s of supervillain bios, train a neural net on them, and style-transfer them all to be about AI, I just had GPT-3 generate the resulting blog post.

I collected my favorite AI supervillains and illustrated them.

I was notified that @tateisu's Mastodon app "Subway Tooter" has received a warning from the Google Play Store citing user-generated content that "incites discrimination".

A Mastodon app does not host or promote any content. The user types the address to connect to. The responsibility of moderating resides with that server. So unless Google is going to drop Chrome, Firefox and Opera from its platform, this is completely out of line.

Finding someone to talk with about how certain pieces of music effects you is a lot like trying to talk about dreams: a journal doesn't always hit the sweet spot, and unless you're skilled with words or both people are on the same wavelength, nobody ends up satisfied.
